Track and Field Squads Win Six Events at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind.- The DePaul track and field squads won six events at the Notre Dame Spring Opener on Saturday while four Blue Demons hit BIG EAST qualifying marks. The women’s 4x100m relay team kicked off DePaul’s success as Mary Hodges, Kyra Coffey, Jessica Rodriguez and Stephanie Williams carried the baton for a first place finish with a time of 49.19.
Blue Demon throwers gave solid performances throughout the day in shot put, discus and hammer throw. Tammy Burris took first place in the hammer throw with a BIG EAST qualifying distance of 48.41m while Jamie Holifield took second place with a throw of 47.65m. In addition, Jeana LeRoy gave a qualifying performance as she took sixth place with a distance of 44.90m. Holifield hit qualifying marks in all three throwing events, notching a mark of 12.86m in the shot put and 38.71m in the discus.
DePaul’s hurdlers also had a big afternoon, as Patrick Smith won the 110m hurdles with a qualifying time of 15.35 and Erik Felt followed in third with a time of 15.48. Felt also won the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.93.
Richard Byrne gave DePaul a win in distance events, taking first place in the men’s 1,500m run with a time of 4:03.2.
In men’s field events, Ryan Thompson took first in the men’s long jump with a mark of 6.20m and Webster Jones finished second in the men’s high jump, clearing the bar at 1.78m.
Several Blue Demons gave personal best performances during the meet. Monica Kauffman recorded a time of 1:04.35 in the women’s 400m dash, eclipsing her 2005 personal best of 1:07.65. Lindsey Deason took third place in the women’s 100m hurdles, notching a time of 16.86 to pass her old personal best of 17.03.
This coming week will keep DePaul close to home as they compete in the Chicagoland Championships in Naperville, Illinois. The meet runs Thursday, April 6 through Saturday, April 8.
