Blagaich Throws DePaul to Sweep of Bowling Green

CHICAGO – Freshman Stephanie Blagaich earned victories in both ends of the doubleheader and DePaul used two key home runs to post an 8-0, 1-0 sweep of Bowling Green in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Cacciatore Stadium.
In game one, junior centerfielder Linda Secka gave the Blue Demons a 3-0 lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the second. The junior knocked her third homerun of the season over the right field wall and nearly in a window at McCabe Hall, the neighboring dorm. Secka's homerun scored junior Kate Sheaks, who singled up the middle and Stephanie Blagaich, who reached on a fielders choice.
The Blue Demon bats continued to produce in the second, as junior second baseman Jessica Evans and sophomore Marcy Wilus each reached on singles. Wilus was credited with an RBI and crossed the plate on a double steal with freshman Amber Patton.
DePaul (27-15) added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Designated player Sara Polensky led off the frame with a single to left center and scored on Blagaich's double to left field. Blagaich scored on a throwing error by a BGSU left fielder, Allison Vallis on the play.
Wilus knocked in the game clinching run on a single to right field in the sixth inning. Wilus's single scored pinch runner Kate Hanson from second base.
In the first game Blagaich scattered four hits and struck out one for her 10th victory of the season. Senior Leslie Scott threw the final inning and faced three batters.
Emily Gouge (7-1) took the loss for the Falcons and threw a complete game one. Gouge gave up 11 hits, eight runs and struck out two.
Game two saw BGSU starter Liz Vrbale and Blagaich locked in a pitchers dual. The two matched shutout innings before DePaul broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo blast to left by freshman Jackie Tarulli-Fisher. Blagaich made it stand up allowing just two hits and earning her 11th victory of the season and third shutout in two days.
The Blue Demons will return to league play this weekend, traveling to Louisville and USF this weekend. DePaul will play a doubleheader in Louisville on Friday and the first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CST). Sunday the Blue Demons will be in Tampa for a doubleheader with the Bulls.
