Softball Falls in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse snapped the DePaul softball team's seven game winning streak, sweeping a doubleheader at the Syracuse Softball Complex on Sunday.  The Orange took a close 5-4 victory in game one and defeated the Blue Demons 8-1 in the second game.

The Blue Demons never really got their offense going on Sunday as they were out hit 19-8 and their defense was stymied by three errors.

The Orange used four singles to grab a 2-0 advantage in the first inning and held the lead until the Blue Demons posted three runs in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Sandy Vojik walked and freshman Stephanie Blagaich and senior Sara Polensky both singled to load the bases for junior Linda Secka, who connected on a fielder choice that scored two runs.  Freshman Amber Patton ripped an RBI single to score the Blue Demons third run of the inning.

The Orange answered with three runs of their own in the bottom frame of the fifth to take a 5-3 advantage.

The Blue Demons mounted a comeback in the seventh, posting one run before pinch runner Katie Hanson was called out at the plate attempting to steal home and tie the game. 

Blagaich was tabbed with the loss, and threw 3.1 innings. Senior Leslie Scott also appeared in the game and threw 2.2 innings.  The duo combined for three strikeouts and gave up nine hits.

Erin Downey (14-13) notched the win for the Orange and Alexis Switenko recorded the save.      

In the second half of the twinbill, the Blue Demons were unable to get their offense going as they registered just four hits and one run.  Syracuse on the other hand strung together 10 hits for eight runs (seven earned).

Syracuse posted single runs in the second and fourth innings.  They tacked on two runs in the fifth inning and ended their scoring in the sixth by posting four runs.

The Blue Demons lone run came in the sixth inning when sophomore Marcy Wilus ripped a RBI single up the middle.

Blagaich (6-3) took the loss for DePaul.  The Freshman threw the complete game and struck out four batters.

Alexis Switenko (8-1) registered the win for Syracuse.

The Blue Demons will break from conference play on Wednesday, hosting Illinois at Cacciatore Stadium.  The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
