Track and Field to Compete at BIG EAST Championships

The Blue Demons open competition on Friday afternoon as senior Lindsey Deason takes on the first four events of the women’s heptathlon. The school record holder begins with the 100m hurdles at noon and follows with the high jump, shot put and 200m dash.
Deason’s multi-event wraps up on Saturday morning with the long jump, javelin throw and 800m run.
Freshman Stephanie Williams and senior Jamal Cornelious kick off events Saturday afternoon in the men’s and women’s 100m dash. Williams owns a season-best time of 12.30 in the dash while Cornelious notched his season-best time of 10.88 two weeks ago at
Saturday’s field events open at 1:00 p.m. (CST) as sophomore Erika Lockhart throws the shot put, where her season-best mark is 12.51m.
Freshman Gabe Harris enters the 400m dash preliminaries at 2:45 p.m. His best outdoor performance of the season came at the Mt. SAC Relays when he notched a time of 48.33.
The men’s field events feature freshman Ryan Thompson in the long jump at 1:30 p.m. and senior Webster Jones in the high jump at 3:30 p.m. Both athletes set their best marks of the season at the Elmhurst Invitational, where Thompson made his longest jump of 6.75m and Jones cleared the bar at 1.93m.
Junior Jamie Holifield and senior Jeana LeRoy close Saturday’s field events in the women’s discus throw at 3:30 p.m. Holifield holds the team’s top three discus marks of the season, with her best performance of 44.01m coming at the Chicagoland Championships.
Saturday’s competition closes out with junior Anthony Becknek in the 3,000m steeplechase at 4:25 p.m. and junior Carrie Moffett in the women’s 10,000m at 4:45 p.m. Moffett holds the eighth best 10,000m time in the conference this season at 37:32.55 while Becknek’s steeplechase performance of 9:09.97 stands as the sixth best time in the BIG EAST this season.
Sunday opens with the women’s hammer throw at 11:00 a.m. Sophomore Tammy Burris is joined by Holifield and LeRoy in the event. Burris broke the school record in hammer throw at the Chicagoland Championships with her throw of 53.08m, which holds as the sixth best distance in the BIG EAST.
The women’s 4x100m relay squad of junior Mary Hodges, freshman Kyra Coffey, freshman Jessica Rodriguez, and freshman Stephanie Williams enters its race at 10:00 a.m. The team’s season-best time of 48.31 stands as the 10th best in the conference.
The weekend closes out with the men’s 4x400m relays at 1:35 p.m. The Blue Demons are represented by junior Donnie Smith, freshman Patrick Smith, Harris, and sophomore Richard Fugiel. The squad enters the race with a best time of 3:16.26, which is the 10th best conference time this season.
The Blue Demons also compete in the men’s 110m hurdles, the men’s 1,500m run, the men’s 400m hurdles, the men’s 5,000m, and the women’s 4x400m relay.
CSTV will televise the Championships via tape delay on May 15 at 8:00 p.m. (CST).
