PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For the second time in two weeks, DePaul freshman pitcher Becca Heteniak has been tabbed the BIG EAST Conference Pitcher of the Week. Blue Demon first baseman Marcy Wilus was named the Player of the Week after registering a .636 batting average in league play.
The No. 11/14 Blue Demons (40-10, 20-0 BIG EAST) closed out the regular season by sweeping doubleheaders at Villanova and Rutgers this past weekend. They enter this week's Conference Championship as the No. 1 seed.
Right-handed pitcher Heteniak threw her first collegiate no-hitter, May 5 at Villanova. She closed out the conference season with a perfect 10-0 record including a pair of wins at Rutgers and Villanova this past week. She gave up just one-hit and struck out 19 batters, including 12 on Sunday against Rutgers. Heteniak finished the week with a 2-2 record with her loses coming at Loyola and at No. 7 Northwestern. The freshman averaged 1.42 strikeouts per inning and gave-up 10 hits in 26.0 innings of work.
Wilus went 7-for-11 (.636) last week against Rutgers and Villanova. In her four BIG EAST games, she had three home runs, a double and eight RBI for a 1.545 slugging percentage. In game two against Rutgers, she became the first DePaul player this season to hit two home runs in a single game. In her eight games last week, Wilus had four home runs and 10 RBI. At first base, the junior registered 53 putouts and one assist for a perfect fielding percentage.
Blue Demon pitchers have won seven of the league's 12 Pitcher of the Week awards and have had four players named the Player of the Week.
DePaul faces eighth seeded Seton Hall at 4 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, May 10. The Championship is played at the Belleville Softball Complex in South Bend, Indiana.
