OKLAHOMA CITY - DePaul right fielder Sandy Vojik registered three RBI to lead the DePaul softball team to a 3-1 victory over Arizona State in an elimination game at the Women's College World Series on Saturday. The Blue Demons improve to 47-12 on the season and play Arizona at 6 p.m. on Saturday. ESPN will carry the game live.
DePaul had chances to score in the third and fourth innings, but Vojik's 13th home run of season in the fifth gave the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead. Vojik's homer accounted for the Blue Demons' first runs of the WCWS and scored pinch runner Stephanie Blagaich, who was running for second baseman Jessica Evans, who had been hit by a pitch.
Vojik again provided the Blue Demons with a lift as her RBI-single up the middle gave DePaul an insurance run in the seventh inning with two outs. Vojik's single scored shortstop Shea Warren, who reached on a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by ASU catcher Kristen Miller.
ASU's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh. Michelle Smith led off the inning with a double and scored three batters later on shortstop Rhiannon Baca's RBI single down the left field line.
All-American Tracie Adix (22-3) recorded the win for the Blue Demons in her 20th complete game of the season. Adix scattered five hits while striking out three and walking one.
Katie Burkhart suffered the loss for the Sun Devils and finished her season with a 35-13 record. The All-American gave up six hits and struck out nine in her seven innings of work.
Vojik's three RBI are the most registered by any player at this year's WCWS thus far. She also becomes just the third player in DePaul history to hit a home run at the WCWS.
Today's win marked the first for DePaul in the WCWS since 1999 when they defeated Arizona by a score of 1-0.
Arizona State finishes the 2007 season 54-17.
