Women's Soccer Grabs Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Playing the final road game of the regular season, the DePaul women’s soccer team saw the ball bounce the right way in a 1-0 win at Providence on Sunday. The Blue Demons took advantage of an own goal just before halftime and held off the Friars in the second half.
The own goal came just 11 seconds before halftime at 44:49. Shannon Williams took six of DePaul’s 12 shots against Friars while Kelsey Hoinkes totaled two saves in the net. Christie Fink totaled two shots and Molly Borchardt, Callie Hemming, Michelle Scandora and Jenna Fagerman each took one attempt.
Providence (5-7-3, 0-6-3 BIG EAST) took 22 shots, but just two were on goal. The Friars nearly tied the game in the 79th minute when Tara Ricciardi hit the post, but the DePaul defense held strong to preserve the 90-minute shutout.
DePaul (3-14-0, 1-8-0 BIG EAST) closes the regular season next weekend with a pair of home matches at Wish Field. The Blue Demons host Seton Hall on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. contest Sunday against Rutgers. Sunday’s game will also be Senior Day as DePaul’s seniors will be recognized.
Game Notes: Kelsey Hoinkes registered her first shutout of the season... the win snapped a nine-game losing streak... DePaul leads the series over Providence, 3-1-0.
