CHICAGO Visiting Rutgers scored a goal in each half for a 2-0 win over DePaul in the final game of the regular season for both teams. The Scarlet Knights scored in the 13th minute and added a penalty kick in the 88th minute on a cold, blustery afternoon at Wish Field.
Rutgers, ranked No. 18 in this week’s Soccer America poll and No. 24 in the NSCAA top 25, found the net in the 13th minute off the foot of Alicia Hall. Kristen Edmonds started the play from the right flank and her ball was deflected by DePaul goalkeeper Brittni Lally. The ball caromed over the Hall and she knocked it in at 12:52 for the eventual game-winner.
Kelsey Hoinkes played the second 45 minutes for the Blue Demons in the net and made her presence felt right away. Three minutes into the period, Rutgers’ Ashley Jones got behind the DePaul defense and Hoinkes came out from the goal and smothered the play with a diving stop to end the scoring chance.
With 12 minutes left in regulation, Hoinkes came up big again as Gian DeMaio fed Kristen Edmonds on the right side. Her eight-yard liner was stopped by Hoinkes. On the counter, DePaul nearly tied the match as Callie Hemming lofted a serve from the right side, but it was just ahead of a charging Shannon Williams at the back post.
Rutgers (12-5-1, 7-3-1 BIG EAST) added an insurance goal late in the game when Edmonds converted a penalty kick at 87:14.
DePaul (4-15-0, 2-9-0 BIG EAST) finished the match with four shots while Rutgers totaled 10 attempts. Hoinkes made three saves in the second half after Lally made one stop in the first period. Both sides took four corner kicks.
