Blue Demons Earn 10 BIG EAST Qualifying Marks

SOUTH BEND, Ind. The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their 2008-09 indoor season today at the Blue and Gold Invitational hosted by Notre Dame today at the Loftus Center. Stephanie Williams logged two first place performances, while Mary Cate Quiett and Joe Strawder each won an event.
Williams, along with Kyra Coffey and Ivy Moffet swept the podium in the 200m dash. Moffet placed third with a time of 26.21, while Coffey finished just in front of her with 26.17. Williams won the event with a time of BIG EAST Conference qualifying time of 25.24. The senior also won her only other event, the 60m dash, with a time of 7.74 to surpass the BIG EAST qualifying standard of 7.85.
In the men’s 200m dash, Gilbert Lifton led the way for the Blue Demons with a fifth place finish in a time of 22.76, while Gabe Harris finished just behind him , recording a 22.80
Mary Cate Quiett won her first event of the indoor season logging a time of 2:55.85 to win the 1,000m run, exceeding the conference qualifying standard of 2:59.04. Additionally, Quiett currently holds the school record for DePaul with a time of 22:55.35. Kelly Pickering finished in fourth place with a time of 3:04.59.
Joe Strawder earned two BIG EAST qualifying marks in the long jump and the triple jump. Clearing a distance of 7.14m, Strawder exceeded the standard of 6.70m to finish on top of the standings. He placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.84m.
Alanna Kovacs placed third in the shot put during the first event of her collegiate career. Exceeding the BIG EAST standard of 12.75m, the freshman recorded a throw of 13.03m. Jim Theologes led the Blue Demons on the men’s side, placing fourth with a shot put of 14.49m.
Two-time BIG EAST Outdoor hammer throw champion Brad Millar placed third in his first weight throw attempt of his junior campaign. Surpassing the conference standard by over two meters, Millar threw for a distance of 17.11m.
Patrick Smith picked up his first BIG EAST qualifying mark of the season, logging a 400m time of 49.72 to place fifth. Gabe Harris finished just behind him, crossing the line at the 50.00 mark.
In the men’s 500m dash, Erik Felt led DePaul with a second place finish in a time of 1:05.58, exceeding the conference standard of 1:05.64.
Greg Udzielak recorded his first BIG EAST qualifying time, placing second in the mile run with a time of 4:17.26.
No team scores were kept.
