Track and Field Closes Day One of NCAA Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Mary Cate Quiett raced in the 800m run preliminaries and Joe Strawder competed in the men’s long jump as the DePaul women’s and men’s track and field teams opened the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships on Friday. The Blue Demons return to action on Saturday as Melissa Fraser enters the women’s javelin throw and Brad Millar joins the men’s hammer throw.
Strawder posted his second-best leap of the season as he covered 7.38m in Friday’s long jump. The Blue Demon sophomore placed second in his flight and took 18th place overall in a field of 31 jumpers. O’Darien Bassett of Troy won the event with a mark of 7.94m.
The women’s 800m trials saw Quiett finish 13th out of 24 runners with a time of 2:09.33. Quiett’s performance stands as the third-best of her career and her third race better than 2:10.00. Western Michigan’s Becky Horn took first place with a time of 2:05.32. Quiett did not advance to Saturday’s finals.
Millar opens Saturday’s events at 11 a.m. in the men’s hammer throw. The sophomore from Port Elgin, Ontario enters the event with a season-best mark of 61.96m. Fraser follows at 2:45 p.m. in the women’s javelin throw. The Blue Demon freshman holds a national ranking of No. 30 with a personal-best throw of 48.34m.
