Millar Wins Hammer Throw Title at BIG EAST Championships

VILLANOVA, Pa. Brad Millar won the men’s hammer throw title as the DePaul men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded the 2008 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on Sunday. The Blue Demons placed 12th in both the men’s and women’s team standings at Villanova’s Jumbo Elliott Track.
Millar covered 58.22m to capture the BIG EAST hammer throw gold for the second time in as many years. The sophomore from Port Elgin, Ontario gave DePaul its second BIG EAST individual title of the weekend and the third in program history. He also exceeded the NCAA Regional qualifying standard of 56.80m for the sixth time this season.
On the track, Stephanie Williams delivered a pair of school records as she finished sixth in the women’s 100m dash and fifth in the 200m dash. The 100m race saw Williams clock a time of 11.80 on the straightaway to break Sherri Bean’s 1987 record of 11.93. Williams notched a 200m time of 24.01 to improve upon her previous school record of 24.28.
The Blue Demons continued to re-write their record book in the women’s 4x800m relay when Claire Duck, Allyson Petersen, Maureen Kuhta and Mary Cate Quiett posted a time of 8:58.85. The DePaul foursome broke its previous school record of 9:01.78 while taking fourth place.
Quiett gave the Blue Demons a medal as she finished third in the women’s 800m run with a time of 2:08.43. The freshman from Mishawaka, Indiana satisfied the NCAA Regional standard of 2:09.80 for the second time in as many days.
DePaul posted a sixth place finish in the men’s 4x400m relay. Patrick Smith, Gilby Lifton, Richard Fugiel and Gabe Harris passed the baton for a season-best time of 3:15.23.
The women’s hammer throw saw Tammy Burris and Virginia MacFabe place seventh and ninth, respectively. Burris covered 47.73m, while MacFabe followed with a 46.03m toss. Joe Strawder cleared 14.50m in the men’s triple jump for an eighth place finish.
Louisville won the women’s team title with 106 points, while Notre Dame took the men’s crown with a tally of 122.5. DePaul collected 33 points in the women’s events and 23 points in the men’s competition.
The Blue Demons return to action on Wednesday, May 14 as they host the Inaugural DePaul Relays. The twilight meet at Lane Stadium marks DePaul’s first home outdoor competition in more than 50 years.
