Fraser Bows Out at NCAA National Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa Melissa Fraser of the DePaul women’s track and field team competed at the NCAA National Championships on Thursday in the javelin throw preliminaries. The BIG EAST Conference Champion fouled in all three of her attempts at Drake Stadium.
Fraser entered the meet with a national ranking of No. 25 and a DePaul record mark of 49.52m. The freshman from Hillsburgh, Ontario placed third at the NCAA Mideast Regionals on May 31. Fraser concludes her first season as a Blue Demon with five performances greater than 47.00m.
Fraser is the first DePaul track and field athlete to compete at an NCAA National Championship meet since 2004, when Erin Moffett ran the 10,000m race. Other Blue Demons to compete at NCAA National Championships include Carey Ryan in 2001, Chris Stafford in 1998 and National Champion Dave Dopek in 1995.
The 2008 outdoor track and field season saw DePaul rewrite its record books with program-best marks in the women’s 100m dash, 200m dash, 800m run, 4x100m relay, 4x800m relay, javelin throw and men’s pole vault. The Blue Demons won two individual BIG EAST titles and picked up a program-best five qualifications for the NCAA Regional Championships.
