INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. DePaul scored first for the second straight game, but couldn’t hold on to the lead as the Blue Demons dropped a 2-1 decision at Butler on Sunday. Dominique Locascio put DePaul ahead just before intermission, but the Bulldogs converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute and knocked in the game-winning goal with just under four minutes left in regulation.
Both teams finished the afternoon with a dozen shots as DePaul put seven of its attempts on goal. Locascio finished a corner kick started by Beth Perry on the Blue Demons’ final shot of the first half to give the visitors the lead. Perry’s first collegiate assist found Locascio and she headed the ball past Butler’s Laura Baker at 41:17.
DePaul (0-2-0) held the one-goal lead over the remainder of the first half and into the second period until a foul was called on the Blue Demons inside the penalty box. Sarah Phelps was successful on the ensuing kick at 64:26 to knot the score at 1-1.
As the clock ticked down towards the end of regulation, the Bulldogs were able to push the deciding goal into the net for the 2-1 decision. Sarah Phelps started the action and found Abbie Kaul on the right flank. Kaul crossed the ball in front of the DePaul net and it founds its way through traffic to Carrie Twyman for the five-yard chip at 86:04.
The Blue Demons return to Wish Field on Friday afternoon against Michigan State. Kickoff in Lincoln Park is scheduled for 3 p.m. The weekend concludes with a 1 p.m. ET game on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Toledo.
