DePaul Closes Preseason With Victory

KALAMAZOO, Mich. Goals by Steffen Vroom, John Kornfeld and Alex Mangan led the DePaul men’s soccer team to a 3-1 win at Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos scored the first goal of the match before the Blue Demons answered with three consecutive scores.
Western Michigan’s Shaun Clements put the home team on the board with an 18-yard goal from the left side in the 29th minute. Sam Meyer was credited with the assist at 28:49.
Steffen Vroom evened the scored a little over 10 minutes later with an unassisted goal to send the game into intermission knotted at 1-1.
Following a hand ball in the 18-yard box, Kornfeld put the Blue Demons ahead for good by converting the penalty kick at 55:17. In the 77th minute, Eric Hermosillo found Mangan for the third and final goal of the afternoon. Hermosillo’s serve from the right side connected with Mangan and he finished the play with a header to the back of the net at 76:01.
The Blue Demons totaled 19 shot in the match, including 12 on goal while Brian Visser registered one save in just over 85 minutes of action. Joe Ferrari finished the match in goal for DePaul. Western Michigan managed four shots on the afternoon and the Blue Demons held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Blue Demons open the 2008 regular season on Sunday, Aug. 31 against Valparaiso. Kickoff in Lincoln Park is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Game Notes: DePaul finished the preseason schedule with a 2-1 record... the Blue Demons outscored their exhibition opponents by a 4-2 margin.
