CHICAGO Visiting Michigan State scored two of its three goals in the first 15 minutes of action to knock off DePaul, 3-0, at Wish Field on Friday. The Blue Demons outshot Michigan State, 8-6, but the Spartans scored three times on their six attempts. DePaul concludes this weekend’s action at Toledo on Sunday afternoon.
Lauren Hill scored twice for Michigan State (2-0-0) with the first goal in the third minute and the second in the 13th minute of play. Lauren Sinacola started the first goal with a pass ahead to Hill and she flicked it over a charging Kelsey Hoinkes at 2:19. Hoinkes got a hand on the ball, but was unable to slow the momentum as the ball rolled across the endline. Hill’s second goal at 12:34 saw her one-time a serve from Megan Brown and finish the play with a liner to the back of the net.
Michigan State added an insurance goal late in the game when Cara Freeman headed home a corner kick from Sinacola at 80:55.
Morgan Celaya took four of DePaul’s eight shots on the afternoon while Brittni Lally replaced Hoinkes in goal and totaled a save in 65 minutes of action. Each team attempted one corner kick and Michigan State’s Lindsey Wrege totaled five saves.
DePaul (0-3-0) finishes the weekend with a road match on Sunday at Toledo. Kickoff against the Rockets is set for 1 p.m. ET.
Game Notes: Ten of DePaul’s 11 starters were freshmen or sophomores... Friday’s game was the first meeting between the two programs.
