DePaul Drops Road Match at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. Arianna Foster and Shannon Williams scored goals as DePaul jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Northwestern tallied the tying and go-ahead goals in the final 10 minutes for a 3-2 decision on a rainy, windy Sunday afternoon. The match marked the end of non-conference play for DePaul as the Blue Demons open BIG EAST action Friday against Notre Dame.
Foster got the Blue Demons on the board with her first collegiate goal in the 39th minute. She broke free from the Northwestern defense and beat keeper Carolyn Edwards for the early DePaul lead.
Early into the second period, Williams added a second DePaul goal as she took a pass from Callie Hemming and scored at 53:12. The goal was the first of the season for Williams while notched her second assist of 2008.
Northwestern (5-2-0) stormed back into the match behind Amanda Hoffman. Hoffman scored on an unassisted goal in the 69th minute before adding her second and third goals in the 81st and 86th minutes. The final tally was the difference-maker as it sealed the win for the Wildcats at 85:24.
The Wildcats finished the game with 13 shots while DePaul totaled eight attempts. Kelsey Hoinkes finished the game with seven saves for the Blue Demons.
DePaul (2-6-0) opens BIG EAST play Friday against Notre Dame at Wish Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
Game Notes: The eight goals in the last three games are the highest three-game total since scoring 11 in Oct. 2004... DePaul posted wins over Houston (4-0), TCU (3-0) and Cleveland State (4-0) in that span... nine different players have scored at least one goal and 12 have at least a point... Shannon Williams moved into a tie for ninth all-time (Kelly DeBaene, 2003-06)... Williams has 21 points on nine goals and three assists... her nine goals are tied for eighth all-time (Erin Walter, 2002-05)... Northwestern leads series, 5-0-0.
