Louisville Scores Twice to Knock Off DePaul

LOUISVILLE, Ky. The Louisville Cardinals scored a goal in each half to knock off the DePaul women’s soccer team, 2-0, in a BIG EAST match on Sunday. DePaul returns to Wish Field next weekend for games against Marquette and USF.
Louisville (4-4-1, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) scored in the 26th minute on Kelsey Hunyadi’s first goal of the season. Following a DePaul foul inside the penalty box, Hunyadi got the penalty shot past DePaul goalkeeper Brittni Lally at 25:54.
The Cardinals added a second goal in the 75th minute when Lindsay Boling gathered a rebound in front of the DePaul goal and scored for the fifth time this season.
The Blue Demons nearly scored on two separate occasions as Casey Mercurio’s header attempt with under two minutes left in the game was knocked out of the goal for a team save for the Cardinals. In the 77th minute, Arianna Foster’s bid for a goal hit the post.
DePaul (2-9-0, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) totaled eight shots in each half while Louisville made 15 attempts. The Blue Demons also collected seven corner kicks and the Cardinals generated a single corner kick opportunity. Lally finished the game with four saves. Of DePaul’s 16 shots, nine were on goal as Katie Zoeller made eight saves.
The Blue Demons return to Wish Field next weekend for a pair of home games against Marquette and USF. The Golden Eagles visit Chicago on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. game Sunday against USF.
Game Notes: In the last two games, the Blue Demons have totaled 13 corner kicks to a combined four for their opponents... the shutout was just the second for DePaul in the last seven matches... Louisville leads the series, 7-6-0, with four straight victories.
