Track and Field Set to Compete at the Chicago Penultimate

CHICAGO The DePaul men’s and women’s track and field squads travel to the city’s south side on Sat., May 9 for the Chicago Penultimate. The field features schools from across the Midwest region, including Valparaiso, Lewis, UW-Oshkosh, Illinois Tech, Saint Xavier, and host University of Chicago.
The Blue Demons get rolling at 1 p.m. (CST) when the field events commence. Virginia MacFabe and Jim Theologes get the throwing events started, while Britanny Lewis and Joe Strawder take on the long jump. MacFabe begins by competing in the discus throw, and is slated to throw the hammer later on in the afternoon. Theologes is entered in the shot put.
At 2:45 p.m., James Waller and Ebonie Cobb make their way to the circle for the discus throw and shot put, respectively. At the same time, Cynthia Edwards and Strawder compete in the triple jump. Strawder, who has one NCAA regional qualifying mark in the event so far this season, looks to use these last-chance meets to secure a spot in the Mideast Regional on May 29-30 in Louisville, Ky.
Chris Johnston and Alanna Kovacs round out the DePaul field event entries. School record holder Johnston enters the pole vault field, while Kovacs enters as the top-seeded javelin thrower. At last weekend’s BIG EAST Conference Championships, the freshman landed in fourth place with an NCAA regional qualifying distance of 44.61m.
The running events get started at 4:20 p.m. when Brittany Lewis and Stephanie Williams enter the 100m dash preliminary races. Finals for the event are scheduled for 5:50 p.m. Williams is also scheduled to run in the 200m later in the afternoon. Representing the Blue Demon sprinters for the men’s squad is Gabe Harris, Matt Holland, and Jamil Chammas. Holland and Chammas take on the 400m and Harris runs in the 200m.
Terah Cheatham, Erin Lakie, Cari Krikorian are set to race in the 1,500m, while Kelly Pickering participates in the 800m. Middle-distance runners for the men will be Chris Gallardo, Dennis Baliga, Matthew Graham, Dan Steinfels, and Rob Morgan.
The distance races will conclude the meet, and are schedules to occur around 7:50 p.m. 5,000m entries include Kelsey Dolan, Stacy Schmitz, Jakub Kolacz, and Brian Begalke. Stephanie Hughes concludes the competition for the Blue Demons in the 10,000m.
The Chicago Penultimate marks the second-to-last chance for DePaul to meet NCAA regional qualifying standards in hopes of securing a spot in the Mideast Regional field. The Cardinal Twilight is the final regular-season meet and is scheduled for May 15.
