FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Brad Millar of the DePaul men’s track and field team competed at the NCAA National Championships today in the hammer throw preliminaries. The two-time BIG EAST Conference Champion and 2009 league runner-up fouled on all three of his attempts at John McDonnel Field.
Millar entered the meet with a national ranking of No. 17 and a season-best throw of 64.79m. This was the junior’s first trip to the championships after placing fourth at the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 30 with a throw of 63.16m. He concludes the season with eight throws surpassing the 60m mark.
Millar, a Port Elgin, Ontario native, is the second DePaul student-athlete in as many years to compete at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Last season, Melissa Fraser advanced to the national championships after taking third place at the Mideast Regional. He becomes just the sixth-ever national qualifier in Blue Demon track and field history and the first male thrower since Carey Ryan earned All-American accolades in the hammer throw in 2001.
Walter Henning of LSU earned the top spot in the preliminaries after hitting a distance of 69.81m. The top-12 out of 25 student-athletes move on the championship round to be held early Friday afternoon.
This concludes the 2009 outdoor track and field season for the Blue Demons.
