CHICAGO - The DePaul women's basketball team claimed the Maggie Dixon Classic Championship for the second consecutive season -- this year, it was a 91-47 win over UC Riverside on Saturday at McGrath Arena that claimed championship honors.
DePaul's high-octane offensive attack was led by Keisha Hampton, who was named the tournament's MVP after leading the Blue Demons with 23 points while Anna Martin and Deanna Ortiz each added 12 apiece. Taylor Pikes rounded out the evening with her second career double-double on 10 points and led the Blue Demons with 10 rebounds.
The Blue Demons led from beginning to end and started the game by hitting 8-of-13 from the field and jumped out to a 24-4 lead in the first 8:34 of action. Hampton had seven of DePaul's early points while Sam Quigley, Katherine Harry, Martin, Ortiz and Pikes also added to the Blue Demons early scoring frenzy.
DePaul went up by as many as 29 points, 45-16 on Ortiz's second 3-pointer with 2:00 to play in the first half. The junior finished her career-day by hitting 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point line.
The Blue Demons took a 48-23 advantage to the locker room at the half, and started the second half on a 5-0 run which ran their lead to 30 points with 18:14 to play.
DePaul sustained its advantage throughout and took a 79-39 lead on China Threatt's free throw with 5:35 remaining.
The Blue Demons were 31-of-63 from the field and registered 21 assists. Quigley dished out a season-best eight and Ortiz followed with three.
After having a big night on Friday and then again tonight, Pikes and Martin joined Hampton on the All-Tournament team.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham led UC Riverside with 11 points and was also named to the All-Tournament team. Brittany Waddell, who had 17 points in the Highlanders victory of Morgan State on Friday, was also named to All-Tournament team for Riverside.
The Blue Demons return to action on Wednesday when they host Illinois State on Field Trip Day in Lincoln Park. DePaul and the Redbirds tip at noon with nearly 3,000 Chicagoland grade school children packing into McGrath Arena for the midweek matinee.
Notes: DePaul scored 90+ points for the second consecutive game... the first time since the 2007-08 season that DePaul has scored 90 points on back-to-back nights ... in 07-08 DePaul scored 90+ points in three straight games... versus Loyola-Chicago on Dec. 8 (93-51), Chicago State on Dec. 12 (91-59) and at Northern Illinois on Dec. 17 (90-58)... Keisha Hampton led DePaul with 23 points, including 19 in the first half... she was 7-16 from the field with three, 3-pointers... Deanna Ortiz had a career-best 12 points on 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point line... her four 3-pointers puts her one shy of her 2009-10 season total... she now has a total of seven on the season... Taylor Pikes had her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds... she also had one assist and was 4-of-5 from the field... Sam Quigley had a season-best eight assists... with 377 career assists, she needs two more assists to take over the No. 4 position... she has had at least one assist in her last 70 games... Hampton, Anna Martin (12), Ortiz and Pikes were all in double-figures... DePaul's bench outscored UC Riverside's 37-26... Tre'Shont Nottingham led the Bears with 11 points, shooting .500 ( 3-of-6) from the field... UC Riverside is now 1-1 on the road this season... UC Riverside was held to just 47 points in both its losses this season... fell to Arizona State on Nov. 14, 58-47... DePaul is now 1-0 all-time against UC Riverside... now 3-0 all-time against school's from the Big West Conference...
