TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 16/18 DePaul's 10-game winning streak came to an end with a 79-66 loss at Arizona State on Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena. The Blue Demons fall to 13-2 on the season while ASU has won its last five games and improves to 8-2.
Teayna Watson led ASU with 25 points while Dymond Simon finished with 24.
Felicia Chester paced a trio of Blue Demons in double-figures with 16 points while Keisha Hampton finished with 14 and Anna Martin totaled 11. Hampton and Taylor Pikes both grabbed six rebounds for DePaul.
DePaul shot .442 from the field for the game but were just 10-of-26 in the second half.
After starting the game 6-for-16 from the field which included a Hampton 3-pointer and a Sam Quigley layup in the opening 2:15 of play the Blue Demons took 19-12 advantage with 10:00 on the clock on a Martin jumper.
The Blue Demons stretched their lead to 24-16 when Hampton found Katherine Harry under the basket with 8:18 left in the first.
DePaul then went cold from the field, while ASU put together a 12-4 run which was capped off by a Joy Burke layup with 3:44 to play. Burke's basket gave the Sun Devils a 29-28 lead, its first since opening the contest, 2-0.
The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the stanza and went to locker room with the score knotted at 33.
The Blue Demons and ASU continued to go basket-for-basket in the opening minutes of the second half.
With 15:43 to play, Martin completed a three-point play which gave DePaul 44-41 lead, but DePaul was hit with its second cold spell and ASU raced out to a 52-45 with 9:03 to play.
Over the next 5:30, ASU used a 19-9 run to push its lead 71-54 with 3:33 to play.
DePaul got into the double bonus with just under three minutes to play, but the Blue Demons were just 7-of-12 in the closing minutes and finished the game 18-of-32 from the free throw line.
The Blue Demons break for the Christmas Holiday and return to action on Dec. 29 when they host New Jersey Tech. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m., while both audio and video will be available on DePaul's BlueTube.
Notes: DePaul's 10-game winning streak came to an end... both of DePaul's losses this season have come on the road... first loss was at Purdue on Nov. 21 -- exactly one month ago... DePaul tied a season-low with 12 assists... had nine assists in the first half and just three in the second... Tenayna Watson and Dymond Simon become the first ASU players to score 20 or more points in a game this season...
