CHICAGO - Softball players are always looking for a walk, and this one was pretty special for the DePaul program.
On October 16, the Blue Demons softball team joined more than 12,000 participants in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks throughout the Chicago area.
There were a total of seven walks held in Illinois on that Sunday to raise money for breast cancer research and for aid to breast cancer patients.
The Blue Demons participated in the Montrose Harbor Walk, which began at 9 a.m. The funds raised will help the American Cancer Society reach their goals of providing breast cancer patients in Illinois with free wigs, rides to treatment, and other services.
In addition, the fund-raising will result in new treatments, more extensive breast cancer research along with enabling more women to receive mammograms.
In the pouring rain, the softball players completed a three-mile walk around Montrose Harbor. Marla Mathews, a senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., took the lead in making arrangements for the event.
"We always do this event every year," Mathews said. "It is something that inspires us and may benefit us one day.
"As women, we like to give back to a great cause such as this one."
Each member of the team set a goal of raising $100. The Blue Demons wound up raising $2,925, easily exceeding their original goal.
"That's typical for the softball team to set high goals, and then exceed them," said assistant coach Nancy Evans. "We are happy that our players had a chance to participate in such a great event.
"We hope that other women's teams in the athletic department will join us next year to support this worthwhile cause."
