CHICAGO - Before the stocking are hung by the chimney with care, the No. 21/19 DePaul women's basketball team hosts Southern Illinois on Thursday at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Blue Demons and Salukis tip at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Park. Cami Padilla will provide the call courtside for DePaul's BlueTube, while GameTracker and in-game notes and updates are available on www.twitter.com/DePaulWBBSID.
The Blue Demons (11-2), who have won their last three games and nine of their last 10, put their 25-game McGrath-Phillips Arena winning streak on the line on Thursday. The streak started with a win over Pittsburgh on Feb. 23 2010, has spanned 667 days and has included five wins over ranked teams and three programs from the State of Illinois. Heading into Thursday's contest, DePaul has won 12 straight games over programs from the State of Illinois including four this season.
On Monday, DePaul posted its fourth win over a program from the State of Illinois with a 73-54 win at Illinois State. The Blue Demons were paced by Jasmine Penny and Anna Martin's 20 points while Katherine Harry paced the floor with eight rebounds. Penny's 20 points were a career-high for the sophomore while Martin paced the team in assists for the fourth consecutive game.
On the season, Martin leads the team with 18.0 points per outing which ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference. Martin has led the Blue Demons in scoring in six games and scored a season-high 29 vs. Portland on Nov. 19. Martin enters Thursday's game with 959 career points and is on track to become DePaul's 27th career 1000-point scorer.
Southern Illinois comes to Lincoln Park with a 3-6 record and has dropped four of its last five games. The Salukis lone win in that stretch came against IUPUI on Dec. 8. SIU topped the Jaguars 77-63 behind 27 points from Cartaesha Macklin and 22 from Teri Oliver. Oliver leads the team with 19.2 points per game while Macklin follows with 15.8 points. The duo has accounted for 53% (315-of-595) of the Salukis scoring this season.
Thursday's game marks the 12th meeting between the two programs and the first since 2008. The Blue Demons hold an 8-3 series advantage and have won the last seven. DePaul is 5-0 in games played on its home floor with four contests being played in Lincoln Park and one at the Allstate Arena.
The Blue Demons break for the Christmas Holiday before closing out 2011 with a New Year's Eve contest with Northern Illinois. The Saturday afternoon matinee tips at 2 p.m. in Lincoln Park.
Tickets for all DePaul women's games can be purchased at any Ticketmaster location or at the DePaul Athletic Ticket Office located in the Sullivan Athletic Center or by calling (773) 325-SLAM.
- Noting the Blue Demons: DePaul is 693-395 (.637) all-time... the 2011-12 campaign is the 37th season of women's basketball at DePaul University... since the start of the 2003-04 season (275 games), the Blue Demons have held 65.1 percent of their opponents to less than 70 points (179-of-275)... in that span, DePaul is 154-25 (.860) when holding opponents to less than 70 points... in that same time span, DePaul has scored 70 or more points in 184 games... DePaul is 161-23 (.875) when scoring 70 plus points... in the last six plus seasons (243 games), the Blue Demons are 175-68 (.720)... in the last 70 home games against conference opponents, DePaul has posted 59 victories... over the last ten plus seasons (367 games), DePaul has scored at least 80 points in 122 games... the Blue Demons hold a 117-5 (.959) record in those games... in the same span, DePaul is 51-1, including 49 straight wins, when scoring at least 90 points.
- It Could Happen: Coach Doug Bruno could win his 539th career coaching victory and 499th at the collegiate level… with one 3-pointer it would run DePaul's streak to 73 consecutive games with a 3-pointer… Keisha Hampton needs three points to tie Mfon Udoka (1994-98) for 11th (1,569 points) DePaul's all-time scoring list… a win would be DePaul's 14th straight over teams from the State of Illinois… Anna Martin needs 32 points to become DePaul's 27th 1,000-point scorer.
