PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Following their first meet of the indoor track and field season, senior throwers Alanna Kovacs and Tim Nedow swept the BIG EAST Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors. The nod is the second of Nedow's career while Kovacs, who won both the shot put and weight throw events at the Blue and Gold Invitational, picks up the honor for the first time.
Nedow earned BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week after his 19.51-meter throw in the shot put set a DePaul record.
The senior from Brockville, Ontario, was the only competitor at the Blue and Gold Invitational in any event to register an NCAA qualifying mark as the throw qualified for both the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Nedow's six throws went uncontested as the six best of the competition, with his shortest throw coming in at 17.75 meters, almost a meter ahead of the next closest thrower. Nedow also added one other throw of over 19 meters at 19:10 and fell below 18 meters just once.
On the women's field side, Kovac's 14.51-meter shot put also set a DePaul record and earned her first place in the event.
Kovac's 17.08-meter weight throw was good for first place at the Blue and Gold Meet as both her shot put and her weight throw marks qualified her for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. She was one of just two throwers to register a weight throw of over 17 meters.
The Blue Demons return to competition in the new year as they travel to Madison, Wis., to compete in the Badger Track Classic on January 14.
