DES MOINES, Iowa -- Junior DePaul shot put thrower Tim Nedow battled 24 other throwers and inclement weather on Friday at Drake Stadium. The junior took 19th place in the shot put today, while he finished 14th and earned second-team All-American honors in the discus on Wednesday.
With steady rain and thunderstorms in the surrounding area, Nedow was able to get his first throw in the second flight off, but as the shot put landed a lightning strike halted the competition for 30 minutes.
When the delay was over, Nedow got into the circle for his second thrown but had to reset twice as a torrential downpour hit Drake Stadium and resulted in Nedow's second foul of the event.
With one remaining toss, Nedow stretched the tape 16.85m which was good enough for 19th place. Three other student-athletes fouled on all three attempts and a total of 19 athletes had at least one foul during the competition.
Nedow finished his junior outdoor season with five first place finishes in the shot put including his second BIG EAST Conference Championship of the 2010-11 season. Nedow also won the indoor shot put championship in February.
Nedow, who was the only BIG EAST student-athlete to compete in two events at the NCAA Championship, concluded action for the Blue Demons.
Mary Cate Quiett closed out her career in a Blue Demon uniform with an 800m run on Wednesday, while Alanna Kovacs participated in the javelin on Thursday. The four events (800m, discus, javelin and shot put) are the most events for DePaul at the National meet. The season was also the first for head coach and Blue Demon All-American Dave Dopek.
