Blue Demon Throwers Shine at Canadian Senior Championships

CHICAGO - DePaul track and field standouts Tim Nedow, Melissa Fraser and Alanna Kovacs all competed at the Canadian Senior Championships, at the Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary, June 22-25. The Blue Demon student-athletes were represented in five different throwing events - men's shot put, men's and women's discus, women's hammer throw and women's javelin.
Fraser was crowned the National Champion in the javelin while Nedow qualified for the World University Games with his second place finish in the shot put.
On Friday, Fraser took home first place in the javelin with a throw of 50.25 meters. The Blue Demon senior launched her event-winning throw on her second attempt, while her last two throws sailed over 44 meters.
Kovacs also competed in the javelin and improved throughout the competition and her final toss of 49.51 meters was good enough for third place. Kovacs also took third place in the discus with a throw of 49.81 meters. Her discus throw was nearly a half of meter longer than her seeded distance of 49.40.
Nedow began his Canadian Championships with the discus on Friday. The Blue Demon junior, who earned second-team All-American status at the NCAA Championships in June with his 14th place finish, sent the discus 46.01 meters and took fifth place.
The discus was a warm-up for the shot put on Saturday in which Nedow cleared 18.69 meters which qualified him for the World University Games in China, August 12-23.
Fraser concluded action for the Blue Demons with the women's hammer throw. Fraser stretched the tape 52.42 meters which placed her ninth.
DePaul finished its season at the NCAA Championships in June. Mary Cate Quiett closed out her career in a Blue Demon uniform with an 800m run. Kovacs participated in the javelin while Nedow represented DePaul in the shot put and discus. The four events (800m, discus, javelin and shot put) are the most events for DePaul at the National meet. The season was also the first for head coach and Blue Demon All-American Dave Dopek.
