Providence Holds Off No. 20/18 DePaul

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 20/18 DePaul women's basketball team's six-game winning streak came to an end with a 60-52 loss at Providence on Saturday at Alumni Gym.
Providence (9-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) was led by Teya Wright's 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Friars outrebounded the Blue Demons 46-26, but just a slight 13-11 advantage in second-chance points.
Anna Martin paced DePaul (14-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) with 17 points, three assists and two steals. The junior played nearly the entire game with only a few seconds rest and had Wright guarding her for most of the game. Jasmine Penny finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
The first half was all about rebounding as the Friars outrebounded DePaul 29-8 and scored nine second -chance points which led to a 35-28 halftime deficit for the Blue Demons.
DePaul jumped out to an early 9-4 lead behind seven points from Martin and a layup from Penny gave the Blue Demons their ninth point of the game. Providence answered with a 14-2 run which was capped off by a three-point-play by Lauren Okafor.
Providence took its largest lead of the first half, 35-23 on a putback from Symone Roberts with 1:07 to play.
The Blue Demons closed the gap late when Megan Rogowski hit a 3-pointer with six seconds to play in the stanza. Deanna Ortiz intercepted the PC inbounds and her layup with three seconds cut the Friar lead to 35-28.
The Blue Demons did a much better job on the glass in the second half and had 18 boards compared to the Friars' 17.
DePaul opened the second half on a 6-0 run and pulled within one, 35-34 on a Martin layup. With the Blue Demons seemingly meshing on offense, PC clamped down on its defense and went on a 15-5 run and pushed its lead to double-digits (50-40) on an Alicia Cooper jumper with 6:36 on the clock.
The Blue Demons chased the PC lead the rest of the way and got within five, 52-47 on a pair of free throws from Penny. An offensive rebound by Okafor and a layup by Wright would put the Friars back up by seven and the Blue Demons would get no closer than six in the closing two minutes.
DePaul returns to Lincoln Park and hosts Pittsburgh on Jan. 14 at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The game with the Panthers has been tabbed Autism Awareness game and will tip at 7 p.m.
Notes: DePaul was just 3-of-9 from the free throw line for a season-low .364 from the charity stripe... DePaul was outrebounded 46-26... the 20-rebound difference was the most this season for DePaul... DePaul's 26 rebounds is a season-low... Katherine Harry paced DePaul in rebounds for the sixth consecutive game and in 13 of DePaul's 17 games... Third consecutive game DePaul has trailed at the half...
