Blue Demons Fall to Villanova, 87-71

VILLANOVA, Pa. - An early 10-0 deficit was too much to overcome as DePaul dropped an 87-71 decision at Villanova on Sunday. Brandon Young led DePaul with 22 points and six assists as the Blue Demons drop the first game of a two-game road trip.
Villanova (8-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) took advantage of four turnovers and five missed shots by DePaul to build a 10-0 advanatge early in the contest. A three-pointer by Moses Morgan got the Blue Demons on the board with 15:16 left in the first and DePaul chipped away and pulled to within one at 20-19 on a free throw by Morgan at 10:11.
The Wildcats answered with eight straight points and led by as many as 15 in the first half before taking a 48-36 lead at intermission. Villanova shot a sizzling .625 (15-24) from the field in the first 20 minutes while going 14-of-20 from the free throw line.
DePaul (10-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) stayed within striking distance closing the deficit to eight points on two occasions but Villanova held off the Blue Demons each time. The Wildcats led by as many as 17 points with 6:08 left and settled for the 87-71 final.
Young - coming off a 26-point, six-assist game against Pittsburgh on Thursday - added three steals and three rebounds to his stat line on Sunday. Cleveland Melvin added 19 points and four boards while Morgan scored nine points.
Maalik Wayns led Villanova with 21 points and Dominic Cheek added 20 points. The Wildcats committed a season-high 28 turnovers in the game but shot .560 from the field and outrebounded DePaul, 45-23.
