Blue Demons Battle Indiana, Fall on the Road

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 71 DePaul Women's tennis team's eight match winning streak came to an end after Indiana battled to a 4-3 win on Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.
In a match that was not decided until the final point was won, the DePaul women's tennis team showed resolve and the ability to fight back after losing the doubles point.
Looking to even the match in singles, Patricia Fargas did just that with her dominating 6-2, 6-3 win over Evgeniya Vertesheva in the second position. The Blue Demon freshman improves to 7-0 in the No. 2 spot while Fargas boasts a team-best 19-8 singles mark.
Like a see-saw, Indiana countered with a win on the top court and then took a 3-1 lead when Kayla Fujimoto won her match on the sixth court.
Blue Demon senior, Gia McKnight did not want to let her team down and registered her 83rd career singles victory with a 6-4, 7-6 triumph over Katie Klyczek on the third court.
Rebeca Mitrea followed and evened the match with her 6-3, 6-3 win on the fifth court.
With the match knotted at three, the duals' focus shifted to the fourth court where Kelsey Lawson and Carolyn Chupa were locked in an epic dual.
Lawson took the first set 6-3 and Chupa countered with her own 6-3 set-two victory. Tied a five in the deciding set, Lawson pulled ahead 6-5, but Chupa would win the final two games to send the Hoosiers past DePaul, 4-3.
DePaul returns to Big Ten country next weekend and travels to No. 64 Ohio State for duals with the Buckeyes and No. 30 Arkansas on Feb. 24 and 25, respectively.
