Women's Tennis Falls to Northwestern in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. - On a day that No. 49 DePaul fell to No. 14 Northwestern, 7-0 the Blue Demon doubles team of Gia McKnight and Jasmin Kling defeated their first nationally ranked team of the season.
Playing at the College of Charleston Tennis Center on Wednesday the Blue Demons and Wildcats opened their match with doubles play. With competitive matches on all three courts from the first serve; Northwestern squeaked out the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts.
McKnight and Kling, who were representing DePaul on the top doubles court, came into Wednesday's doubles match determined to give the No. 14 team of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton everything they had in their arsenal.
Using strong serves and strategically place shots, the Blue Demon tandem knocked off their first nationally ranked team, 8-6 for DePaul's lone win of the day. McKnight and Kling improve to 12-5 on the year and are 10-3 in the top doubles spot. The Northwestern pair fell to 15-8.
Moving into singles, Northwestern (7-6) clinched the match with wins on the fifth, third and fourth court.
Playing the match out, Patricia Fargas and Kling pushed their nationally ranked singles opponents into a third set. Fargas, who was up against No. 61 Brittany Wowchuk, won her first set 6-2, but dropped the final to two sets on the second court.
Kling, who was facing her fourth ranked opponent of the season, traded sets with No. 16 Katie Turvy. The Northwestern junior won the first set 6-3, but Kling bounced back for a dominating 6-1 set-two victory. The third set played back-and-fourth, but Turvy took the final set 6-4 which ended Kling's attempt at her second upset of the day.
DePaul (10-5) returns to the Midwest for a BIG EAST Conference clash at Notre Dame on Mar. 31. The Blue Demons and Irish hit the courts at 1 p.m. (CT).
