Babicz, Fraser, Kovacs Advance to Outdoor Finals

AUSTIN, Texas - Behind a career-best 18.41-meter shot put distance, sophomore Matt Babicz qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships along wih senior javelin throwers Melissa Fraser and Alanna Kovacs.
In the shot put, Babicz opened with three solid throws of over 17 meters and an 18.11-meter throw before registering his career-best mark. The 18.41-meter distance was good for 12th among the top competition and earned him a berth to the championships. Tim Nedow's best throw of the day came in at 17.94 meters, short of qualifying.
In the women's javelin, Fraser once again registered the top mark. Her 52.94-meter throw bested the competition, earning her a place at the outdoor championships where she is the lead advancer from the west preliminaries.
Behind Fraser was Kovacs who registered the seventh-best mark on the day. Her 49.59-meter distance have her a spot at the NCAA outdoor finals in two weekends as well.
The Blue Demons are represented at the preliminaries again tomorrow when Kovacs competes in the women's discus in the morning and Matthew Graham takes on the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at night.
