DES MOINES, Iowa - With the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning on Wednesday afternoon, seniors Melissa Fraser and Alanna Kovacs are both set to compete in the javelin throw on opening day after qualifying at the West preliminaries two weeks ago.
Following the East and West preliminaries, Fraser enters the competition tomorrow as the country's leading advancer. Her 52.96-meter distance at the preliminaries topped all other competitors and puts her at the head of the pack. Fraser's season-best throw of 54.24 meters, which came in early April, stands as the second-best distance in the nation in 2012.
Behind Fraser on the final performance list is Kovacs, who enters the day with the eighth-best preliminary throw. After registering a 49.59-meter throw at the West Preliminaries, Kovacs has put herself in a good position on Wednesday. Although her best throw of 2012 comes in at 51.75 meters, earlier in her career, Kovacs rattled off a 54.88-meter throw.
With two of the top-10 women on the javelin performance list, DePaul looks for a solid performance in the event which begins at 2:40 p.m. central time.
After Wednesday, the Blue Demons will not be represented at the meet again until Saturday when sophomore Matt Babicz takes on the men's shot put. That event begins on Saturday at 10 a.m.
