CHICAGO - DePaul Athletics is preparing to send off the women's soccer team in style just before the Blue Demons depart for Madison, Wis. and its NCAA tournament opener on Saturday night.
Staff members, coaches, fellow student-athletes from other teams and DePaul soccer fans will gather at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in the Sullivan Athletic Center for a rousing tribute to coach Erin Chastain and her players before they depart.
DePaul is ranked No. 13 in the NSCAA national poll and No. 7 in the Soccer America Top 25 with an unprecedented 16-0-4 record. The Blue Demons are one of only two undefeated teams in the nation along with No. 1/1 UCLA.
This team has been making history all season long, including the 20-game unbeaten streak which is the longest in the annals of DePaul women's soccer.
Chastain & Co. won their first BIG EAST regular-season title and first BIG EAST tournament title.
The No. 7 spot in the Soccer America Top 25 is the highest national ranking in program history. DePaul has been ranked for an unprecedented 11 consecutive weeks.
The Blue Demons set another program record with 10 BIG EAST awards including Alexa Ben winning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and Chastain, Michele O'Brien and Sarah Stanczyk being honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
It's the first DePaul team to finish the regular season undefeated.
Freshman Alexa Ben has set a new single-season record for assists with 11. Sophomore Abby Reed (12 goals) needs one more to set the single-season record. Junior Elise Wyatt (11 goals) is also within range of making some history.
Ben and Wyatt lead the team with 29 points---two shy of equaling the season record set by Julianne Sitch in 2003. DePaul's 44 goals this season are two shy of the team record set in 2004.
