SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The DePaul track and field teams opened up their 2014-15 indoor season by putting together a strong showing on Friday evening at the Blue and Gold Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
The event, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, was a one-day meet, the Blue Demons' first as a team since last May.
DePaul had three event-winners on Friday in South Bend. Matt Babicz continued his stellar career by tossing a personal best throw and winning the shot put competition (18.73m) and Trevor Kintyhtt took the weight throw event (17.55m, a personal record). Kintyhtt placed second to Babicz in the shot put, throwing a personal best of 17.55 meters.
Mac Melto crossed the finish line in 47.87 seconds, a personal record, to win the 400-meter dash and claim yet another individual event for DePaul on Friday.
Elsewhere, Scott Arsenault ran a personal best time of 2:26.82 to take second in the 1000 and Chaz Bottoms placed fifth in the 200 with a PR of 22.32 seconds.
On the women's side, Gabrielle Howard posted a career-best 11.54 meters in the triple jump to place second. In addition, Jackie Kasal (2:58.36) placed third in the 1000-meter run and Jazmyne Durrah (16.56) took third in the weight throw.
Other men's highlights included a second place finish by Ivy Dobson (6.90) in the 60-meter dash and a third place finish in the 400 by Sebastian Feyersinger (48.82).
"While it wasn't a large meet, we certainly were prepared to get this season started," said head coach Dave Dopek. "We were definitely ready to compete today. We had a few event winners and several individuals stepped up and started their seasons with great performances. This is a sign of very good things to come."
DePaul next competes one week from today (Dec. 12) at the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind.
