DePaul Tops Providence on the Road, Five Reach Double Figures

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Jasmine Penny scored 14 points and led the DePaul women's basketball team to a 74-63 BIG EAST Conference victory over Providence on Saturday at Alumni Hall. DePaul has won its last six BIG EAST Conference games and improves to 17-5 overall and are 8-2 in BIG EAST games. Providence falls to 6-15 and is 1-9 in league games.
Brittany Hrynko, Chanise Jenkins, Megan Rogowski and Jessica January all finished with 10 points which marks the fourth straight game that five DePaul players have reached double figures.
Hrynko paced DePaul on the glass and tied a career-high with nine rebounds. She also added six steals and four assists. Podkowa tallied a career-high five assists for the Blue Demons, who reached the 20-assist mark for the 13th time this season.
The Blue Demons held a 48-40 rebounding advantage which included a 20-10 margin on the offensive glass. DePaul also held an impressive 18-7 margin in second chance points. With DePaul crashing the glass, the Blue Demons came up huge in the paint and outscored the Friars 44-24.
Tori Rule led Providence with 17 points. Alexis Harris grabbed 13 rebounds and added eight points before fouling out with just over two minutes to play.
After leading by four points early, DePaul was unable to find its rhythm and trailed Providence by as many as six points, 25-19 with just over four minutes to play in the half.
The Blue Demons, who forced Providence into 12 first half turnovers, locked down on defense and closed out the stanza on an 11-2 run. Penny keyed DePaul's run from inside as the senior tallied six of her eight points in the final 1:46 of the half.
DePaul went to the locker room up 30-27.
Penny and the Blue Demons continued to fire on all cylinders and opened the second half on a 9-4 run and took their first double-digit advantage, 42-31 on a Penny layup with 14:33 to play.
DePaul would not see its margin dip below 10 points the rest of the way and took its largest lead of the game, 72-54 with just under two minutes to play when Penny found a sprinting Podkowa under the basket for a layup.
The Blue Demons stay on the road and return to action at Xavier at 7 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
The Blue Demons return to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Feb. 9 when they host Creighton. The noon contest on Fox Sports 1 has been tabbed DePaul's Play4Kay pink game and all cancer survivors are eligible for two free tickets. DePaul has also partnered with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer with fans in attendance having the ability to either sign up to walk or volunteer for the three-day event in May 31-June 1 in Chicago.
