
DePaul Wins Seventh Straight, Tops Xavier on the Road

CINCINNATI - The DePaul women's basketball team extended its BIG EAST Conference winning streak to seven games with a 78-49 win over Xavier on Wednesday at the Cintas Center. The Blue Demons improve to 18-5 and are 9-2 in BIG EAST play. Xavier has dropped its last five games and falls to 8-15 and is 3-8 league action.
Brittany Hrynko led four DePaul players in double-figures with 18 points while 10 different players scored in the win. Jasmine Penny recorded her third career double-double and finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Chanise Jenkins and Megan Rogowski each finished with 11 points.
Megan Podkowa also grabbed 10 rebounds and added eight points. DePaul held a 43-38 advantage on the glass which included a 13-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Blue Demons finished with 18 assists and Jenkins led the way with six. Hrynko added five and Jessica January dished out four assists.
Shatyra Hawkes paced Xavier with 17 points which included five 3-pointers. Ashley Wanninger added 11 points.
It was a tale of two halves, with the Blue Demons scoring 52 points in the final 20 minutes after scoring just 26 in the first half. DePaul shot just 29.4 percent and had just four assists and four steals in the opening half.
The Blue Demons turned up the heat in the second half with is blistering 60.6 field goal percentage, while it forced Xavier into 14 turnovers and tallied seven steals. The Blue Demons also recorded five of their eight triples in the final stanza.
DePaul jumped out to an early 16-8 advantage in the opening 10:30, but got stuck on 16 for the next 6:22. Jenkins broke a 16-all tie with a layup with just over three minutes to play in the half.
The Blue Demons looked to head into the locker room up six (26-20). With 14 seconds left to play in the half, Rogowski knocked in a fastbreak layup and a January steal led to her converting three-point-play with four seconds to play in the stanza.
With Xavier looking to score in the final seconds, Hawkes converted the four-point-play with under a second to play in the half and DePaul went to the locker room only leading 26-24.
Xavier started the second half on an 8-3 run and took a 32-29 advantage with 17:09 to play.
With the game tied at 36, the Blue Demons opened up the game with an impressive 17-3 run and led 53-39 with 9:30 to play.
DePaul continued to run on all cylinders and took its largest lead 73-43 on a January jumper with 4:02 to play.
The Blue Demons return to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Feb. 9 when they host Creighton. The noon contest on Fox Sports 1 has been tabbed DePaul's Play4Kay pink game and all cancer survivors are eligible for two free tickets. DePaul has also partnered with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer with fans in attendance having the ability to either sign up to walk or volunteer for the three-day event in May 31-June 1 in Chicago.
