FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Blue Demon senior Matt Babicz and sophomore Mac Melto each continued their seasons on Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark.
Competing in the shot put competition, Babicz tossed a best throw of 18.45 meters to finish 10th overall and advance to the NCAA Championships (June 11-14) in Eugene, Ore. Melto, meanwhile, moved through to the quarterfinals of the 400-meter dash by placing 22nd with a time of 46.95 seconds.
"Mac ran a really tough race today and finished strong. We're definitely looking forward to an even better performance tomorrow," said head coach Dave Dopek.
Also competing tomorrow will be freshman Trevor Kintyhtt (discus).
Three Blue Demons did see their seasons come to an end on Thursday, however. In the long jump, MaShayla Kirksy finished in 45th (5.44m), Jackie Kasal ran the 800 in 2:10.46 (34th) and Tayler Whittler took 47th in the 100 (12.22 seconds).
"It's certainly not the ending that those three planned for but they did obtain some much-needed experience that they will use to their advantage next year," Dopek said.
Action from the University of Arkansas continues tomorrow.
