DePaul Falls in Season Opener to Stony Brook

Saige Gallop led the DePaul (0-1) attack with 16 of the Blue Demons' 48 kills. Myah Reed totaled 10 kills in her freshman debut.
Colleen Smith guided the Blue Demons with 40 assists and a .217 attack percentage for the match with the Blue Demons hitting .348 in the final frame.
DePaul had 13 team blocks which was the most it has recorded since the 2011 season when the Blue Demons tallied 15.5 in a match. JaQuayla Baker led the defense at the net with five block assists and a solo block.
With the excitement of the first match, the Blue Demons raced out to an early lead and took the first set 25-22. Gallop led the way with five kills in the first frame. Baker added three blocks to highlight DePaul's hot start.
Stony Brook (1-0) evened the score when it won the second set, 25-15. The Seawolves were led by five kills from Melissa Rigo, who paced Stony Brook for the match with 15 putaways.
The third set proved to be the most exciting set. Battling for every point Stony Brook prevailed 32-30. A back-and-forth battle between the Blue Demons and Seawolves led to the longest set of the match and the frame was not separated by more than two points the entire time.
With momentum on its side, Stony Brook then went on to win the fourth and final set 25-22.
DePaul returns to the court on Saturday, Aug. 30 when it hosts Bradley at noon and Hampton at 7 p.m.
Earlier in the day on Saturday, Hampton and Stony Brook hit the court at 10 a.m. and Bradley and Stony Brook play 4:30 p.m.
