Blue Demons Reverse Sweep Panthers

Katelynn Oxley explodes for career-high 17 kills
Milwaukee, Wis. – DePaul volleyball defeated Milwaukee 3-2 (32-34, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 18-16) on Wednesday evening, tallying its second reverse sweep of the season and fourth-straight match win. The Blue Demons improve to 6-3 on the year.
Setter Amanda Saeger organized the DePaul offense, achieving 1,000 career assists in the opening frame, and 56 total on the evening, a new career-high for the sophomore. Fittingly, Saeger notched the match point, adding three kills and three blocks.
Middle blocker Katelynn Oxley also had a career night, exploding for 17 kills at a .394 clip, her career-high, along with six blocks. Morgan Stewart matched Oxley with 17 kills, the match-high, while Martina Diana and Jade Dudley-Epps each added 11 apiece. Dudley-Epps added a team-best seven blocks.
Eva Hurrle paced the Blue Demons on defense, earning 34 digs, her first match with 30 or more, while fellow freshman Ryan Gorski registered 13.
"After those tough first two sets, our group had a choice to fold or dig in and show some grit," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We steadied our first-ball touches and made smarter attacking decisions in the third set, which let us get our middles more involved and spread the net. As the game went on, our game-changers off the bench made a real impact, Abby [Cahill] and Ryan [Gorski] came in, dug some incredible balls, giving our hitters another chance to score.
That energy fueled our attack, especially in the fifth set, and some stubborn defense and tough serving closed it out. To come back and find a way to win when nothing came easy shows the fight this group has. We grew a lot as a program tonight."
The Panthers were led by 16 kills from Josie Noble.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The Panthers took an early four-point edge, behind two kills, a block and a DePaul attack error. Following a timeout, the Blue Demons took the next four points to knot the set, but Milwaukee went on another 4-0 scoring run to go back in front. A pair of kills from Diana propelled the Blue Demons to tie the frame yet again, at 13 points apiece. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with DePaul fending off a staggering seven set points, but it would not be enough, as Milwaukee logged two kills to take the set, 34-32.
SET TWO
The battle continued into the second set, with neither squad taking more than a two-point lead in the first half of the frame. A 3-0 run from Milwaukee put them ahead late, 20-17, and the Blue Demons could not recover. Two DePaul attack errors closed the set, 25-20, in favor of the Panthers.
SET THREE
DePaul started strong in the third set, jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead behind kills from Scholz and Diana. The Panthers rapidly responded to even the set at seven points, but led by stout serving from Gorski, the Blue Demons earned eight straight points. A kill from Oxley secured a commanding set win for DePaul, 25-16.
SET FOUR
The momentum carried into the fourth set for the Blue Demons, earning seven of the initial ten points, propelled by a pair of aces from Stewart. From there, DePaul added nine more kills and two aces, en route to a 25-19 set victory.
SET FIVE
Milwaukee regained its footing in the deciding set, taking a three-point lead. The Blue Demons refused to go down quietly, tying the set at 13 points each, led by three kills from Oxley. Additional kills from Diana, Dudley-Epps and Oxley fought off three set points for the Panthers. It was a crafty kill from Saeger that earned DePaul the hard-fought victory, 18-16.
