CHICAGO - Heading into the BIG EAST Conference season finale on Friday, DePaul women's soccer received some very good news.
Senior Elise Wyatt was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team on Thursday and sophomore teammate Alexa Ben was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team.
Wyatt is a repeat selection, having been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team last season as a junior. For Ben, this was her first Academic All-District accolade.
As an All-District First Team choice, Wyatt now becomes eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team that will be announced later in the season.
The CoSIDA awards are based on both academic and athletic performance. Wyatt is among the top 30 goal scorers in the country with 11 and set the DePaul all-time career record earlier this season. She is two shy of setting a new single-season record and has two hat tricks in 2015.
The Victoria, British Columbia forward is the only player in the country to repeat as NSCAA National Player of the Week. Academically, she has a 3.60 grade-point average and is majoring in Finance.
Ben has scored four times and is tied with Madeline Frick for the team lead in assists with seven. As a freshman, the Schaumburg midfielder set a DePaul single-season record for assists with 11. Academically, she has a 3.53 GPA and is majoring in Psychology.
Wyatt and Ben will lead the Blue Demons into a pivotal showdown with Marquette at 2 p.m. Friday at Wish Field. The match being broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network will have a huge bearing on where DePaul and Marquette are seeded in the BIG EAST Championship.
DePaul (11-3-4, 5-1-2) comes into the game tied for second place with Georgetown with 17 points. St. John's leads the BIG EAST with 19. Marquette (8-6-4, 5-2-1) is right behind DePaul with 16 points.
