MASON, Ohio - The DePaul men's and women's cross country teams competed at the BIG EAST Championships Saturday morning and both teams claimed eighth-place finishes. Chris Korabik finished first for the Blue Demon men, while Courtney Tedeschi led the DePaul women.
The men's 8k was first on the Saturday morning in Mason, Ohio. Korabik took 23rd in the race with a time of 24:27.7, climbing up the leaderboard after a slow start.
"Chris Korabik ran well," said assistant coach Leah Bohr. "He was confident in his ability to execute the plan and went out and did just that."
Sophomore Jake Pecorin was the second DePaul men's runner across the line when he finished 49th with a time of 25:19.1. Pecorin was followed by Alex Campanella in 63rd at 25:45.4. A trio of Blue Demon runners finished 10 seconds within each other when Jeremy Lozano (25:51.1, 66th), Regen Hatcher (26:00.3, 67th) and Daniel Peterson (26:00.5, 68th) completed the course.
"Jake Pecorin really stepped up for the team today," stated Bohr. "It's nice to have our young guys run well in a conference championship race like today."
As a team, the Blue Demons took eighth place and beat out Seton Hall by 27 points. Georgetown claimed the men's championship with 33 points, one point less than Villanova at 34.
Tedeschi earned her third-straight top team finish by placing 41st with a time of 21:26.6. Jessica Sanborn and Katerina Cirone finished after Tedeschi and broke the 22-minute mark for the Blue Demons. Sanborn clocked a time of 21:35.0 in 44th place and Cirone finished at 21:44.1 for 47th.
"While the results didn't show it today, the women's group is still continuing to progress," said Bohr. "We haven't had 3 ladies under 22 minutes in a long time and they believe in running with each other. We are really close."
Paige Skorseth and Christine Mujica rounded out the top-five for DePaul. Skorseth grabbed 64th with a time of 22:15.2, while Mujica claimed a 66th at 22:29.1 in her first BIG EAST Championship of her collegiate career.
The women's team defeated St. John's and Seton Hall in the team standings. DePaul recorded 234 points on the day. Providence won the title on the women's side with a score of 26.
The men's and women's teams now turn the season focus to the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Lawrence, Kan. The regional races are scheduled for a noon CT start on Nov. 13.
