CHICAGO - A 2-0-0 week which saw DePaul outscore its opponents 5-0 resulted in a pair of accolades from the BIG EAST Conference on Monday.
Sarah Gorden was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after she led the Blue Demon back line to consecutive shutouts of Creighton and Seton Hall.
Franny Cerny was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after scoring the winning goal and adding an assist in last Thursday's 4-0 victory at Creighton. She also won the award last week.
This marked the second time this season DePaul has won two awards in the same week. On Aug. 31, Elise Wyatt was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Gorden won the Defensive Player of the Week award.
The Gorden-led back four that also features Elizabeth Endy, Taylor Schissler and Brianna Ryce allowed just one shot on goal in the win over Creighton and the 1-0 result against Seton Hall. In that game on Sunday, the Pirates were held to two shots.
The DePaul defense that also includes goalkeeper Alex Godinez has shut out its last three opponents and recorded 10 clean sheets in 13 games.
The Blue Demons have given up just one goal in their last seven matches.
Cerny's goal and assist was the third time this season the freshman forward has scored at least three points in a game. She is second on the Blue Demons in goals with five and tied for third with 13 points.
DePaul is 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-0 in the BIG EAST---tied for first place with St. John's.
The Blue Demons return to BIG EAST action on Thursday against Butler with a 3 p.m. match at Wish Field that will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network.
