Cerny Honored as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year

CHICAGO - Just before DePaul's BIG EAST playoff opener against Providence on Tuesday, the conference announced that Blue Demon forward Franny Cerny has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
Cerny joins seven other teammates being honored by the BIG EAST.
Elise Wyatt, Alexa Ben and Sarah Gorden were all voted onto the All-BIG EAST First Team by the league's coaches. Lucy Edwards, Alex Godinez and Brianna Ryce were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Cerny headed up the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team as a unanimous choice and was joined by teammate Madeline Frick.
This is the second year in a row a Blue Demon has won the freshman award as Ben was the recipient last year.
Cerny is the second-leading scorer on the team with six goals and five assists. The Berkeley, Calif. student-athlete has four goals and three assists in BIG EAST play. She has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week four consecutive times this season.
Wyatt, who is a repeat All-BIG EAST First Team selection, leads DePaul with 12 goals and needs one more to set a new single-season record currently shared with Julianne Sitch (2003) and Abby Reed (2014).
Gorden and Ben were both All-BIG EAST Second Team a year ago while Edwards was All-BIG EAST Third Team.
DePaul's three All-BIG EAST First Team picks tied St. John's for most in the league. Wyatt has totaled 29 points off 12 goals and five assists this season, both stats which rank second to St. John's Rachel Daly in the conference.
Five of Ben's seven assists have come in BIG EAST action this season to rank tied for second in the league with Georgetown's Rachel Corboz while Gorden has anchored a DePaul defense whose 0.60 goals against average ranks second in the BIG EAST.
