MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The DePaul women's tennis team knocked off No. 60 Princeton on Friday afternoon to open up play at the Blue Gray Classic.
The No. 49 Blue Demons (8-2) took the match, 4-2, and will face No. 8 Alabama in Saturday's semifinals.
DePaul got the scoring started by taking care of the doubles point, courtesy of wins in the No. 1 and 3 matches. Ana Vladutu and Jasmin Kling defeated Lindsay Graff and Alanna Wolff at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, and Rebeca Mitrea and Yuliya Shupenia grinded out a 7-5 win over Joan Cannon and Dorothy Tang in the No. 3 match.
In singles, DePaul's lineup in the No. 4-6 positions led the team to three critical victories to secure the match. In the No. 4 spot, Patricia Fargas stayed perfect this spring with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Katrine Steffensen and Mitrea topped Caroline Joyce, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. Jasmin Kling outlasted Tang, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, in No. 5 singles for her ninth dual win of the year.
"This was a great win for us today," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "Princeton is really good and has played some great teams. To win a rough match in some really tough conditions was a testament to our girls' desire to win. We look forward so much to the challenge of facing a top-10 program tomorrow."
With the win, DePaul improved to 2-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Saturday's match against Alabama is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
