
Blue Demons Take Down San Jose State in Home Opener

CHICAGO -- The 47th-ranked DePaul women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match on Sunday afternoon, beating San Jose State, 6-1.
The match, which marked the Blue Demons' home opener, moved their overall record to 5-2. San Jose State fell to 3-4.
DePaul won 2-of-3 doubles matches to start the day up 1-0. Patricia Fargas and Jasmin Kling defeated Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, 7-5, at No. 1 singles and Rebeca Mitrea and Yuliya Shupenia took care of Julianna Bacelar and Jessica Willett in the No. 3 match, 6-2.
In singles play, Patricia Lancranjan defeated Sybille Gauvain in the No. 1 slot, 6-3, 6-4, and Shupenia outlasted Rey at No. 2 singles , 7-5, 7-6. Ana Vladutu beat Klocker in the No. 3 contest, 6-2, 6-3, and Fargas knocked off Bacelar, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. DePaul also picked up a point courtesy of Kling, who beat Abbie Pahz, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 5 singles match.
"I thought we really had a complete weekend," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "We beat two really good teams. To lose only two singles matches against great competition was really satisfying. We just need to keep working hard and keep getting better."
DePaul carries its five-match winning streak into a pair of home Feb. 14 matches, including a 2 p.m. start against BIG EAST rival Xavier. The Blue Demons' last match against the Musketeers came in the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, which DePaul won 4-0 to earn the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
DePaul follows the Feb. 14 Xavier contest with a match against Chicago State at 6 p.m. the same day.
