DePaul Wins BIG EAST Tournament Title

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- For the second straight year the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Tournament championship belongs to the DePaul Blue Demons.
DePaul shut out St. John's today, 4-0, to capture the title. Rebeca Mitrea, who went a perfect 5-0 in singles and doubles play in three tournament matches, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Championship.
With the win the 35th-ranked Blue Demons will now head to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, the program's second appearance in as many years and third since 2010.
The Blue Demons opened up the scoring with two doubles wins to grab a 1-0 advantage. Mitrea and Zaina Sufi won the first doubles match of the day in the No. 3 position by defeating Stephanie Elgegren and Anastasia Polyakova, 8-4. DePaul's Yuliya Shupenia and Ana Vladutu then locked down the doubles point with an 8-2 triumph over Jaide Collins and Zofia Stanisz in the No. 2 slot.
In singles play, DePaul got an opening win from Mitrea in the No. 6 spot to take a 2-0 lead. Mitrea topped Irena Preotescu, 6-2, 6-1, before Patricia Lancranjan defeated Polyakova, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles to give the Blue Demons a 3-0 edge. Senior Jasmin Kling then clinched the BIG EAST title at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Collins.Â
DePaul won all three matches in the BIG EAST Tournament by a score of 4-0. The Blue Demons have now won their last eight matches and 13-of-14 overall.
