DePaul Tops Kentucky, Moves On to NCAA Second Round

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the first time in school history, DePaul will have a team in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament. The No. 37 Blue Demons knocked off No. 25 Kentucky, 4-1, for their 22nd win of the year on Friday at the University of Michigan.
DePaul will now meet No. 11 Michigan, which defeated Miami (Ohio) today (4-0), in Saturday's second round. Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
"This is such a nice victory for our program," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "It's our first NCAA win. It really goes out to all our former players who helped elevate our program to this height."
DePaul snatched the doubles point away from the Wildcats when seniors Patricia Fargas and Jasmin Kling beat No. 25 Aldila Sutjiadi and Mami Adachi, 8-7 (2). Ana Vladutu and Yuliya Shupenia topped Kirsten Lewis and Nadia Ravita, 8-4, to start doubles play.
Kentucky evened the score, 1-1, when Adachi beat Fargas at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2, but the Blue Demons rattled off three consecutive singles matches to take care of business. Rebeca Mitrea notched a 6-2, 6-3, victory at No. 6 singles over Stephanie Fox and Patricia Lancranjan upset No. 117 Sutjiadi, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 match.ÂÂ
With her team leading 3-1, it was Kling who locked down the match for DePaul, beating Kirsten Lewis, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
"We did such a great job today handling warm weather and wind," Ardizzone said. "We aren't recognized as a good outdoor team but this group put a stamp on that theory. We look forward to an even greater challenge tomorrow."
The Blue Demons will square off with the Wolverines tomorrow at Noon CT with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
