CHICAGO - The No. 20/19 DePaul women soccer squad fell at home to Nebraska Sunday afternoon, 3-1. The match marks the first regular season loss for DePaul since 2013. Alexa Ben scored DePaul's lone goal on the day.
There was no shortage of offense on Sunday between the two sides. DePaul outshot Nebraska, 12-11, while both teams had five opportunities at corner kicks. Abby Reed led the Blue Demons with four shots on the day.
Nebraska opened the scoring in the match early in the first half. After a DePaul foul just outside the box, the Cornhuskers capitalized by scoring off a cross from the free kick in the 15th minute. The score came from Jaylyn Odermann, assist by Jaycie Johnson and Sydney Miramontez.
DePaul answered five mintues later with a goal of its own. Ben received a Sarah Gorden pass through two defenders and was given enough room to drive home a line drive shot to the bottom left corner of the goal. The two sides went into halftime tied, 1-1.
The second half began in Nebraska's favor with a goal in the 55th minute to give Nebraska the one goal lead. One more goal from the Cornhuskers in the 74th minute from Lia Baldo was the final tally of the match.
The loss on Sunday afternoon snapped DePaul's 23-game undefeated streak in regular-season games. DePaul's last regular-season loss came at St. John's on Nov. 2, 2013.
Nebraska's squad came into Wish Field Sunday on six days of rest after its match at Dayton on Friday was cancelled due to inclement weather, while DePaul defeated Army two days ago at home by three scores.
The Blue Demons are back at Wish Field on Friday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. CT to take on Western Michigan. Live video and stats for the match are provided by DePaulBlueDemons.com.
