CHICAGO - DePaul's undefeated start in the BIG EAST Conference brought some well-deserved recognition to the program on Monday.
Lucy Edwards was chosen BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and teammate Franny Cerny was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Shutout victories over Butler and Villanova last week propelled the first-place Blue Demons to a 5-0-0 conference start, and Edwards was a key component in both matches.
In a 1-0 win at Butler last Thursday, the Edwards-led defense limited the Bulldogs to one shot in 90 minutes and zero shots on goal.
The junior midfielder and her defensive cohorts Taylor Schissler, Elizabeth Endy, Kelli Hubly and Avery Hay followed up in a 3-0 victory over Villanova on Sunday, limiting the Wildcats to four shots with three on frame.
That success extended the DePaul winning streak to a program-record seven games. In that span, DePaul (8-4-2) has outscored teams 24-5 and 17-3 in BIG EAST games.
Cerny ignited one of the nation's top scoring offenses with a goal in each match, highlighted by the game-winner at Butler. All 12 of Cerny's points have come in BIG EAST action, and she ranks No. 3 in the league in points.
In NCAA statistics released Monday, DePaul is No. 7 in the country in goals, No. 9 in scoring offense, No. 11 in points and No. 17 in assists. Abby Reed is No. 14 in points and No. 27 in goals.
The Blue Demons return to the pitch Saturday with a noon game at St. John's.
