QUEENS, N.Y. - Stijn van der Slot was among the leading goal scorers in his native Netherlands, and he connected Saturday night on the biggest shot of his collegiate career.
The junior forward scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute to propel DePaul onto an inspiring 1-0 BIG EAST Conference victory over St. John's.
The Blue Demons' fourth conference win in their last five games maintains the team's hold on the sixth and final BIG EAST playoff spot with one game remaining.
With a defense that allowed very few dangerous opportunities for the Red Storm headed by the backline of Caleb Pothast, Max de Bruijne, John Freitag, Hans Wustling and Sasa Labovic, DePaul clamped down on the St. John's attack.
There were two shots that challenged goalkeeper Quentin Low, and both times the junior came up with big saves.
That was the winning formula that set up van der Slot's golden moment in overtime on an assist from Labovic as St. John's (6-6-4, 2-4-2) was eliminated from postseason contention.
DePaul (9-6-2, 4-4-0) closes out the season Thursday night at Marquette with a postseason berth riding on the outcome.
